On 24-th March at the annual CiscoForum technology conference an ICT innovative project implemented at the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz was presented. During the conference, the objectives and scope of the project "Modernization and adaptation of scientific UTP network to work using the IP v. 6" was presented. The attached figure illustrates the complexity of the project.

Modernization and Adaptation of UTP Scientific Computer Network to be Used with IPv6 Protocol
The key problem to be faced by scientific centers basing their research on ICT infrastructure is decreasing efficiency and security of presently used IT tools (including their low capacity). This, in turn, results in reduction of the research quality and cooperation with other scientific centers due to limitations of the presently used IT infrastructure. Hence, the project direct goal will be to implement a new world standard for computer communications, called IPv6. This goal is supposed to contribute to accomplishment of the project major goal, which is to provide the university scientific community with permanent and secure access to IT technology in order to create good conditions for performance of scientific research. The university computer network, in its present form, has been built since 1995 and operates on the territory of Bydgoszcz connecting all dispersed divisions of the university. In the network there operate devices of various generations and origins. The network is built on the basis of Ethernet technology, category 10Mbit/s, Fast Ethernet and GbitEth. The network skeleton is constructed basing on optical fibers GbitEth, the distribution part is based on optical fibers and copper Gbit/Eth, the access part makes use of copper Ethernet with capacities: 10Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s. In the network skeleton and its distribution part there are utilized packet switching in layer 3, where in the access part it takes place in layer 2. In the skeleton part the network has the of a ring, and in the distribution and access parts it is of a ring shape. The network management is reduced merely to the skeleton, whereas, monitoring to its distribution part. The UTP network is connected to the Internet in three access points of independent net providers. Currently, it is possible to access to the network with capacities: 1GbitEth, 25Mbit/s and 2Mbit/s. The project will be implemented in the buildings of the university of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz where all points of IT infrastructure undergoing modernization are located The university computer network in its present form has been built since 1995 and operates in the area of Bydgoszcz city connecting all divisions of the university. Devices of various generations and origins The project will make use of infrastructure of existing buildings with their wiring. These buildings are adjusted to installation of new cables including optical ones without disrupting their structures. Apart from the centers for management of the network services, the interiors where new equipment is to be do not require adaptation. This equipment will be installed in rooms in which now the old generation network hardware is installed.
